Y Kashrut
Canberra does not have a kosher butcher shop or a kosher delicatessen. Coles Supermarket in Manuka and Belconnen have kosher sections for non perishable goods. Many pre-packed products excluding meat are generally available at local supermarkets. Those who keep kosher put in orders once a month and the Executive Secretary coordinates them and arranges transport from Melbourne to the Centre. She can be contacted on 62951052 between 9 and 2 on week days. The Community also stocks and sells frozen challah and a small range of other products such as wine and candles.
The Community provides kiddusim and light meals for communal and private functions, for up to 150 guests. Anyone wanting to organize such a function should contact the Office between 9 and 2 on weekdays at least 4 weeks before the function. More notice is needed for larger functions.
Many kosher products can be obtained in the supermarkets, and the NSW Kashrut Authority produces a directory listing kosher brands of the various products. This information can also be found at www.ka.org.au.
